New River Primary is a state contributing school for students from year one to year six. It is a decile 1C school (Based on Ministry of Education classification).
New River Primary was established as the result of a four school merger in 2005.
The Board of Trustees are committed to providing a school that is positive, sustainable and exciting for the education of our children.
They continue to support and develop the following areas:
• Continued high standards of curriculum delivery.
• Improving achievement in Literacy and Mathematics
• Provide programmes and activities which involve, support and reflect the needs our community.
• Commitment to Health Promotion in all areas as well as the building of a school garden.
• Ongoing maintenance and refurbishment of classrooms and exteriors of buildings
• Values based education.
• Commitment to the physical and emotional well being of the whole school community
• Promotion of a sustainable environment

Community of Learning (Kahui Ako)
New River Primary is a member school of the Invercargill Community of Learning (Kahui Ako). Other schools and agencies involved are Invercargill Middle, Tisbury, Wallacetown, Aurora College, Invercargill Kindergarten Association, Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour, Southern Institute of Technology are all working together to raise the achievement of Invercargill children. In 2022 we are focusing on preparing for the new English and Maths curriculum, as well as unpacking the Aotearoa NZ Histories curriculum.
We will also be looking at how we develop culturally responsive classrooms
Description of the Community
The school community is well established with a mix of European (46%), Maori (31%), Pacific Island (17%), Asian (5%); Latin American (1%)
The Kew Pacific Island pre school operates from the New River School site currently leasing three refurbished classrooms and operating with a licence of 24 pre school children.
